Data Scientist

As a Data Scientist, you will be working on research and development projects involving statistical analysis, machine learning, and data visualization. Setting up experiments and demonstrating predictive performance of models is an important element of the role.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a professional, you will be responsible for the collection, storage and, interpretation of data for the business. Duties include sifting through data to create organized categories, comparing data points to current company processes and writing reports outlining business predictions or proposals.

  • Collect data from business transactions or by setting up and managing new studies

  • Identify, collect, and leverage new 3rd party datasets to improve modeling

  • Process, cleanse, and validate the integrity of data to be used for analysis

  • Transform data into a new format to make it more appropriate for analysis

  • Correlate similar data to find actionable results

  • Build tools to automate data collection and the modeling process

  • Develop custom prediction systems using machine learning algorithms

  • Optimize SERV Holdings's business to improve the experience for consumers, partners, and associates

Skills and Abilities

A data scientist's job is to use data to help the business make decisions. The following lists common skills and abilities:

  • Problem Solving: ability to work through problems methodically to arrive at optimal solutions. Independent thinking and a comfort with ambiguous requirements is a must.

  • Machine Learning: good knowledge of machine learning methods like k-Nearest Neighbors, Naive Bayes, SVM, and Decision Forests

  • Programming Skills: knowledge of statistical programming languages like R, Python, and database query languages like SQL, Hive, and Pig.

  • Data Wrangling: proficiency in handling imperfections in data such as validity and sparsity. Knowledge and tradeoffs of imputing values.

  • Statistics: Strong applied statistical skills, including knowledge of statistical tests, distributions, maximum likelihood estimators as well as predictive optimization techniques.

  • Tools: ability to recommend the right tools for any given task and guiding organizational thinking on best practices.

  • Communication: ability to effectively communicate highly complicated, technical, and detailed findings to end users in all areas of our business.
